 | In 1964, Brother Maynard Weisbrod came to Tucson to "temporarily" pastor at Calvary Evangelistic Center. He met Sister Martha that year; they were married in July of 1965, and the rest is, as they say, history. Originally the congregation met in the old Mount Calvary Baptist Church at the corner of 4th Street and 10th Avenue, and for many years was know only as "4th and 10th".Pastor Maynard presented his vision of building a sanctuary, and in February of 1974, the congregation was not only able to move to the current location but was able to do it "debt-free". Since then, the Lord had blessed this ministry to continue to grow and expand in its effort to reach the lost.
In 1968 Pastor Maynard Weisbrod joined with a fellow minister to establish Calvary Bibleway Church in order to create a shelter organization for Calvary Evangelistic Center and a second church in coolidge, Arizona. Since then, Calvary Bibleway Churches has grown to include about twenty-five churches throughout the United States, four of which are located in the Tucson area. In addition, Calvary Bibleway currently has over one hundred and thirty ministers licensed with the organization serving in the minsitry both in this country and in the foreign field and is supporting serveral ministries in the philippines.
During the late 60's Pastor Maynard began to expand the ministry by committing to a weekly radio program. Since then, that radio ministry has been replaced with a bi-weekly broadcast of the Sunday morning service.
In 1978, Pastor Maynard and Sister Martha accepted and invitation to minister on the foreign field. Their first endeavor, a month long outreach to southern India served to spark and even greater desire to reach souls with the gospel. Sister Elizabeth Reid, a young lady in the congregation, accompanied them on that first trip and set the precedence for members of the congregation accompanying Pastor Maynard on ensuing missionary outreaches whenever possible. Since that first trip, this minisrty has been blessed to carry the gospel to Russia, the Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Zimbabwe, Mexico, The Philippines, Hong Kong and Haiti.
In the Mid-70s, a member of the congregation requested that Pastor Maynard visit a family member incarcerated in the Pima County Jail, Not only did the Lord bless the Pastor's visit with the imate recieving the Lord as his personal Savior, but used this coversion to spark a revival in that inmate's cellblock. Before long, what the county sheriff once called "the worst cell block" was filled with new believers. These inmates then asked Pastor Weisbrod to present the sheriff with a petition from them requesting religious services. Pastor Maynard met with Sheriff Dupnik, and with the cooperation of several other ministers in Tucson, birthed the Religious Advisory Council. This organization of volunteer minsiters and laymen not only schedules and monitors all bible studies, services and baptisms, but also provides an on-staff jail Chaplains as well as counseling and assistance for both the inmate and their family member The efforts of the RAC have been so successful that it has served as a model for organized church ministry to the incarcerated across the United States. Because of the active role that Pastor Maynard and members of the congrefation have taken in this ministry, doors have also been opened to minister in both state and federal penitentiaries.
The Lord has continued to expand the opportunities for Calvary's ministry to reach out to those in need of spiritual and natural assistance. In addition to those ministries already mentioned, Calvary Evangelistic Center currently has Sunday School, Singles, Teen, Men, Women and Youth ministries as well as ministries that reach out to those in the Pima County Juvenile Center and in various Nursing homes.
Pastor Maynard's vision has been and continues to be one of reaching every nation with the gospel of Jesus Christ and empowering every believer to be and overcomer. |
